Plank,
Tony 1981
Trombone
- Marching Band, Concert Band and Jazz Band
It is good to see a few names here from the old days. Sadly, I have pretty
much lost touch with most of my High School friends. I was drawn here by
news of Doug Hendersonâs recent passing. I remember him fondly and what
a great service he paid to the Renegade Regiment in its earliest days.
After graduation from Union I attended the University of Tulsa where I played
trombone in the Marching Band and Jazz ensemble and Euphonium in the Wind
Ensemble. After graduation with a degree in Computer Science, in 1984 I
was married to another Renegade Regiment alumni, Tracey Green (Trumpet,
class of 1983). I also attended Law School at the University of Tulsa graduating
with a JD is 1994, though I still continue as a computer professional.
Upon my wifeâs graduation from the University of Tulsa with a Ph.D. in Molecular
Biology we moved to Philadelphia for three years for her to pursue her life-long
goal of engaging in Cancer Research. Due to the terminal illness of her
Mother, we again relocated to Dallas where we continue to reside. We have
a Son, Joshua, Age 6.
In order to vent my spleen and engage in my passion of writing, I currently
maintain a blogsite called the Disenfranchised Curmudgeon (http://tonyplank.blogspot.com/
) that you are welcome to visit and engage in the vigorous discourse there
on topic of politics, religion and the American condition. My work there
is the closest I can come to the exhilaration I experienced on the field
of dreams that we collectively shared.
So a warm hello to all of my friends with whom I have so thoughtlessly lost
contact. My memories of High School would be but a sterile and miserable
remembrance were it not for the fantastic times I shared with you all. The
times spent under the direction of talented musicians such as Bill Stone,
Ray Bell, Doug Henderson, and Dale Barnett (who was at that time my private
instructor and not yet at Union) are among some of my best memories of my
life.
I would also add that it is such a pleasure to know that those who have
followed after us not only met the dreams of excellence we aspired to back
then, but have gone on to far exceed those humble beginnings. Keep up the
good work and may God Bless each of you richly!

Snare...Union's

After graduating from Union in 1982, I attended O.U. and was a member of
the Pride percussion section. After graduating from O.U. in 1986 I began
working for the Department of Defense and just returned to the States after
a seven and a half year stay in Germany. I am married and have a 7 month
old son. Over the years I have contunued to perform for community band and
Churches. I also teach youth instrumental music for our new Church in Crestview
Florida. My years in the Union music program gave me a life-long love for
music and music education. I thank Russ Mckinnon (percussion instructor
in the 80's) for is mentorship. I'm very proud of all of you kids for keeping
the music program burning bright. Keep up the great work.

Percussion
I was only active in the RR Percussion section for 1 year -1981 - the year of Whitewater and the year Russ McKinnon led us to playing as close to perfection as a group of kids could get! That was the most intense and amazing experience of my life! The next year - my Senior year - I worked on the yearbook and focused on Choir, Drama, Tulsa Co. 4-H and church activities. I also played Viola in the Tulsa Youth Symphony. I met my husband at Oklahoma State in 1984 and we have 2 boys and 1 girl (the oldest is at OSU now), and we have custody of a 6 year old who was my student last year. I'm currently a Kindergarten teacher in Gilmer, Texas. My son's HS band marches military style very well, but it's just not the same as the excitement corps style brings. I talk alot about HS right now, so it was fun to see a few familiar names and everyone's comments on here...

Gallatin,
Bryan 1983
Trombone
I will never forget the Fall of
1980, the first year of the Renegade Regiment. We thought we had something
here, but we just couldn't get any respect. No one understood what we
were doing, but they thought we did it well (whatever it was).
At OBA we knew we were in the finals,
but our history to that point was not stellar. We were massed and the
announcer was caling out the scores, "In Seventh place with a score of
XX.X ---- UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU - kon (I know it's Yukon...I just did that
for effect). I died and was revived all within a few seconds. I never
jumped so high as when the announcer said, "And in second place with a
score of XX.X ---- Broken Arrow". That was the first of many and a tradition
of ecellence was born.
After graduating I went to OSU and
marched there for a few years. Looking for something a little more challenging
than college band I marched with the 27th Lancers and aged out in 1986.
Union had prepped me well for DCI, but the reality of the demands at that
level can only be experienced.
The Fall of '86 I worked with the
Stillware HS Band. We took a program that had been respectable and put
them in the OBA finals! (OK, they came in last place in the finals, but
at least they made it).
I now live just outside of Houston,
TX and am Director of Operations for a large insurance company. I have
a beautiful wife and 3 great kids (ages 10, 2, and 6 months). Life is
good; and the memories and stories of those glory days will last a lifetime.

Married (Lt Col) Rob Provost in Sep

summer we move to Maryland, outside D.C. Will be a Lieutenant Colonel

I found this site while searching
for Wes Cartwright's mailing address since our last two Christmas cards
went to the wrong address. Sad to hear Dale Barnett retired but I had
no idea he stayed for 22 years! That must have been some party.
This site brought back some really
fond memories - three band directors in three years, three
styles, the genesis of the Union Winterguard, Wes and Alan. The Renegade
Regiment Guard was the best thing in
high school. Period. Dot. Exclamation Point!

I graduated with my BS from The University of Tulsa (88) and MBA (91) from
The University of Central Oklahoma. I left Tulsa in '91 and have been expanding
my horizons since. I have lived in 4 states, 7 cities in the past 12 years
and traveled extensively throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Now I am
enjoying a brief hiatus from the choas of the business world and raising
my 2 kids in our current location of Raleigh, NC.
Although I am a University Professor in business, I have continued to teach
flute, piccolo and piano for fun. I haven't been back to visit Dale Barnett
in a while, but my class was the first to break him in [so to speak]. What
fun days and experiences. Apparently he's still doing great with the band
and that makes me proud to be an alumni of the Regiment. The love of music
and marching is still with me :)
01/08 - Recently moved to a new 'burb (Wake Forest, NC). We absolutely love the area. I'm still on a sabatical from the business world and enjoying the chaotic schedule my kids keeping me on these days. My husband is still pushing himself on the race track (motorcycle roadrace), so I wear many hats these days. I'd love to hear from you!

We've moved all over the country....Tennessee, Alabama, Texas.... but have
settled down in the great little town of Olive Branch, Mississippi. I teach
at the local elementary school and help out with the high school guards

on 14 years! I am still unmarried and loving it. HA! I have a wonderful

I
feel strange writing on this site since I was only there for one year.
Being a part of winterguard 1987 was one of the best times of my life.
(I still have my mannequin) My older brother, Steve, was on the bass drum
line. We performed together in 86.
I graduated from Texas A&M in '93 and have been teaching Algebra
I for
10 years. My husband,Steven, and I have been married since '95. We
have
one son, Sam, and another on the way.
Steven and I moved to Nashville, TN to pursue country music in '97. We
now live in Dallas where I am still teaching Algebra and he is getting
his Doctorate in English at University of North Texas.

Wow!
It is so neat that this site was created! Well you may remember me from
my mother's famous handpainted sweatshirts....remember Opus playing various
instruments and Alf with percussion? Well I am now living in a suburb
of Houston and I am teaching Theatre.
I graduated from NEO A&M in 91 with
my Associates and went on to NSU and took my time (having too much fun)
and finally graduated in 97 with my Bachelor of Arts in Eduation in Speech
Communications and Theatre with a vocal music minor. After graduating
I worked my last summer in Oklahoma at NSU doing techincal theatre for
"River City Players", a summer musical theatre show in Tahlequah
and then
moved directly out of the dorms into my first apartment in
Houston. I
have taught both high school and middle school and I love
it. Currently
I am teaching Speech/Debate/Broadcasting and Theatre Arts
at Fort Settlement
Middle School in Sugar Land, TX. It's an absolutely awesome
school!!!
If you're curious check out our district website, click on
campuses and
find FSMS. Find my name under courses and you can go to my
little place
on the web and see what I do...I have to say I'm a bit proud
of my students
and what I do.
About my personal life, I have been
married for going on 6 years now, and wouldn't you know
it, my husband
is a band director. I met the love of my life Rene at Royal
High School,
the very first school where I taught. We have two beautiful
children Rene
"Thomas" 2 1/2 and Isabel Lucia 5 months. Thomas is named
after my late
father who some of you may remember as the bus captain extrodinaire.
Bless
his soul, he passed away in May of 02 from congestive heart
failure. My
mom still lives in Tulsa and we visit often. I always try
to catch up
on the old days, wondering how the band is doing. For those
of you who
check back often I would love to catch up with some of you.
Take care!

Stephens,
Kit 1989
Saxophone
Ths is not
actually kit, if you are reading about him you probably already knew that
he passed away during his time in the renegade regiment. This is his little
sister Alexis Stephens.
I just wanted to write and say thank
you to everyone because if you knew my brother then you would
know how much the regiment meant to him. I also was wondering
if anyone
had any stories or comments about him that they would like
to share with me. I was only 4 when he died and would
love to know more about him from some of his friends and
peers. If you
have any comments for me please email me with them. I would
love to hear
whatever you have to say!! thank you so much

Thatcher-Edwards,
Julia 1989
French Horn
Still in Tulsa, now working for Tulsa Public Schools in
Human Resources.
(If any of you want to move back to Tulsa and have Oklahoma
certification....
Talk to me!!!) So I still get to use my education - even
though I'm definitely
certain now that teaching is NOT for me!
Married for almost 11 years to Chad Edwards - A wonderful man whom I have
just about driven as insane as I am! We have one son, Michael, who is
9 1/2 now and goes to Country Lane Elementary school in Broken Arrow.
I'm still involved with the scouts and the PTA (I just chaired the school
carnival - Thank GOD it's only once per year!!) We were also football
parents this year. Those kids look hillarious running around out there
with these giant heads, giant shoulders, and little, skinny legs!
I'm still learning more about learning disabilities, specifically dyslexia
and ADHD/ADD, and how enormous and far-reaching their effects can be in
learning. It's amazing stuff. Check it out some time! You'll be shocked
at how pervasive one LD can be throughout a life time of learning.
